Belize Newsletter June 2016

Dear Readers,

This month has been filled with highs and lows for Belize and Ambergris Caye.

The nation sent 3 athletes to the Olympics. Although none were able to take home medals, one Olympian of Belizean heritage, Simone Biles, really stole the show. Biles has dual US-Belize citizenship through her Belizean mother, but participated in the Olympics on the US team. She was able to win several gold medals. Now, she and her fellow gymnasts will be heading to Ambergris Caye for a vacation after their victory. Belize, and Ambergris Caye specifically, are always attracting celebrities and big names.

Speaking of big names, Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei is working with Belize Telemedia to upgrade Ambergris Caye’s internet capabilities. Within the next year, the caye’s internet speed will be doubled, and it will gain access to light-speed bandwidth. Another big name, major Canadian commercial airline, WestJet, announced that this November it will begin running regular flights from Toronto to Belize City.

Beyond all of the celebrities and major improvements, the sense of community in Belize, and Ambergris Caye specifically, is still strong. Ambergris Caye had the unfortunate experience of being affected by a hurricane recently. Hurricanes are not particularly common in Belize, but they do happen occasionally. This most recent one to affect Ambergris Caye, Hurricane Earl, was a mere category 1 hurricane. Although it was a fairly benign hurricane (there was no loss of life, thank goodness), there was still some property damage. The Ambergris Caye community came together, none the less, to rebuild and offer support for those affected. It really goes to show the great strength of the Ambergris Caye community.

It’s a wonderful time to come visit Ambergris Caye. The island life is picturesque and tranquil. It’s also a great time to invest, now more than ever. As the infrastructure on the island continues to improve, property values will rise accordingly, and getting in now will let you take full advantage of this.

Until next time,
