Belize is an exciting destination to visit or even to call home, and there is no shortage of fantastic things to do throughout the country. Whether you are an adrenaline junkie, a serious water sports enthusiast or a lover of culture and international history, you will find a bit of everything in Belize.

If you are moving to Belize or just spending a few weeks in paradise, these are the six most popular things to see and do while you're there.

1. Dive the Great Blue Hole

One of the biggest reasons that visitors come to Belize is for the chance to go scuba diving in what is known as the Great Blue Hole. Reaching depths of more than 400 feet, this incredible underwater attraction is full of fascinating natural formations as well as a rich marine life.

Beginners and advanced divers alike can join guided tours to help them take full advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore the hidden wonders of the ocean.

2. Visit Xunantunich

While Belize is home to a number of ancient Mayan ruins and historical landmarks, few are as popular or as culturally significant as Xunantunich. The ruins, which are more than 1,000 years old, are located just a few miles from the Belize border with Guatemala.

To get to the ruins via the Mopan River, visitors have to ride on a 19th century ferry that makes it feel like you're stepping back in time. Once in Xunantunich, don't miss the chance to see El Castillo, the largest of the remaining structures and a religious site used by the ancient Mayans.

3. Explore Ambergris Caye

One of the most popular destinations in all of Belize is Ambergris Caye, an island separated from the rest of the mainland and one that boasts a unique culture.

A favorite among expats and international visitors, Ambergris Caye is home to the charming San Pedro Town and serves as the gateway for exploration of the Belize Barrier Reef, the second largest barrier reef in the entire world.

4. Tour the Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave

Those who want a hint of adventure during their trip to Belize will love the Actun Tunichil Muknal Caves within the Cayo District.

Over 1,300 years old, this cave system is the perfect place for a guided tour or the chance to float through underground rivers within the caves.

5. Get Up Close and Personal With Sharks and Rays

Shark Ray Alley is an appropriately named attraction in Belize, and it is part of the Hol Chan Marine Reserve just south of Ambergris Caye. Once the place where fishermen cleaned their catch at the end of the day, Shark Ray Alley is now a hotspot for sharks and rays who come for the chum.

Amazingly, it is possible to swim among these majestic creatures under the supervision of local expert guides.

6. Dig Into the Local Cuisine

Finally, it would be a mistake to leave Belize without tasting some of the incredible local cuisine. Tamales, often filled with chicken or beans, are a classic dish to try. Other favorites include a type of local pancake called a fry jack and plenty of fresh seafood.

There are hundreds of potential things to do, see and explore while in Belize. These six options, however, are popular choices that you won't want to miss while in the country.
