When you arrive in San Pedro, you will notice that there are 3 main modes of transportation: golf cart, bicycle, and walking. One of the factors that will likely determine what mode of transportation you choose is the location of your hotel and your comfort level of exploring a new town.

The town of San Pedro is small town and many hotels are within walking distance of popular bars, restaurants, and shops. Walking is certainly the most economic option and a great way to see the town. Do keep in mind that sidewalks are inconsistent at best and that the streets can get crowded during busy times with taxis, golf, carts, bikes, pedestrians, and the occasional dog. Walking along the beach is perfectly safe during daylight, though it is best not to walk alone on the beach at night.

Bicycles are a very common sight in San Pedro, especially among locals because they are an inexpensive way to quickly get around town. There are a number places in town where you can rent bicycles, and many hotels also offer this service. A bicycle rental will cost you about $10-15 USD a day. If you are planning to stay in San Pedro for a longer period of time, you may consider purchasing a bicycle from one of the hardware stores in town. For around $150 USD you can purchase a cruiser type bike. You will absolutely want to invest in a sturdy bike lock if you are purchasing a bike and use it anytime you are not out riding (this also applies if renting) since bicycle theft is common.

Golf carts are practically synonymous with San Pedro. You will notice when you arrive that there is no shortage of golf carts and golf cart rental companies. Golf carts are the preferred method of transportation and great for exploring the more northern and southern parts of the island. A 24-hour golf cart rental will cost you approximately $60 USD, though there is sometimes room to negotiate, particularly if you’ll be renting for several days. For those that are visiting long term, renting a golf cart will cost you around $600-700 USD. For those that are planning to relocate altogether, the purchase of a golf cart is an investment you may want to consider. You can find a used golf cart in good shape for around $5,000 USD. A brand-new golf cart will cost you much more, and can be tricky to get permitted unless you are a land or property owner.

Taxis are also readily available and a ride within town will cost you around $5 USD. They are mostly minivans, and mostly unmarked – though they will all have a green license plate. For any trip that goes across the bridge, or far south, you will pay a premium.
