When ECI Development’s Co-Founder and CEO, Michael K Cobb made his first visit to Belize in 1993, he identified a “really wonderful and quaint little island with sand streets and mostly empty restaurants”.

At that time, Belize was haven for the adventure traveler, a niche traveler. They were fishermen, divers, backpackers, those who were content with rustic, mom and pop accommodations, and a completely off-the-grid getaway. Cobb remembers the potholes that were full of water in the rainy season. Children would have to walk over them on their way to school and adults on their way to work. Not only were the potholes a challenge, they were a health hazard.

ECI's History in Belize

Today, the traveler to Belize has changed dramatically, transforming from an adventurous traveler, to now, the mainstream vacationer. There are families and children exploring Belize and many expats who are spending their time in this Caribbean paradise. What we have seen over the years in this wonderful country of Belize is this incredible growth and development that has brought real progress to this island in many, many ways. And Joel Nagel, Co-Founder of ECI, has been able to lead this progress by his vision - his ability to see the future and predict trends has ultimately brought many exciting realities to Belize.

In 1993, the population of Belize was around 200,000 people. Today, Belize’s population has grown to be more than 380,000. While progress can sometimes be criticized, Cobb has recognized that 158,000 people are now under the age of 19 yrs old. At some point this generation of young people will want to start families, and they will need economic security in order to do that. In other words, they will need jobs.

“Yes, progress means change”, states Cobb, “but waves of change are incredible waves of opportunities. It’s an incredible transformation and maturation in this marketplace and ECI Development has had the privilege of being here in Belize the past 25 years and watch this change happen. It’s fantastic, wonderful, and magical.”
