Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) has come to the aid of senior residents with its 2014 Golden Citizen Electricity Bill Pay Program. Â As part of a raft of initiatives, the company will pay all the electricity bills for a randomly selected group of people. Â This will come as a valuable aid to many older residents who might be struggling to find the money to pay all their household bills.
In a small ceremony hosted in Belize City, 20 so-called Golden Citizens were provided with awards that represented a yearÂs free electricity from BEL; however, this group is only a small percentage of the 160 people living in Belize who were selected. Â Each month, BEL will pay any electricity costs, allowing senior citizens to save 12 monthÂs expenses.
BELÂs mission statement is to Âprovide reliable electricity at the lowest sustainable costs, stimulate national development and improve the quality of life in Belize.  To achieve this, a number of initiatives have been started, including the Bill Pay Program.  While the initial 20 people have been given their certificate, officials will visit the remaining 140 residents over the coming week to present them with the awards.
There are a number of conditions that people have to meet in order to be considered for selection. Â These include being registered as a Golden Citizen with BEL and being over the age of 65 years. Â Individuals must also already have an account with BEL under the Social Rate bracket. Â Meanwhile, for those who received the award, electricity consumption canÂt rise above 60kWh per month; is only for power used between January 1st and December 31st 2014, and must only be allocated for residential purposes.
For those living in Belize, particularly the elderly who can find making bill payments tough, the awards will be greatly welcomed by the lucky recipients. Â BEL revealed that it was over the moon that residents were joining the firm as a Golden Citizen, and urged those over 65 to update their account so that theyÂre eligible for the award in future years. Â For those unsure of what to do, people can contact BEL via the companyÂs Golden Citizen Priority Service. Â This was launched in 2013 and aims to provide the best quality care possible for older people.
