Fishing is an extremely popular pastime for many living in Belize, and it was only revealed in the past few days that youngsters are as passionate about the hobby as adults. In fact, so passionate was 11-year-old Jhoan Hernandez, that he won the title of the Central America Junior Angler of the Year.  Now, one of the first fishing events for 2014 has been held, with Mad Storme winning triumphantly at Captain MorganÂs Retreat for the Captain MorganÂs Wahoo Challenge.
On Saturday January 11th, fishing enthusiasts from around San Pedro Town met at the retreat in preparation for the yearÂs first competition. Â Over the past few weeks, the weather has not been favorable for fishing. Â Because of this, just five of the 15 registered boats were able to contend with the rough waters and make it back to shore for the 5pm weigh-in. Â However, this didnÂt stop a lot of people gathering at the weigh-in station to see their favorite fishermen return home. Â Throughout the day, people enjoyed good food and cold beverages to get the party atmosphere on its way.
As time was called at Captain MorganÂs, the fishing crews drew out their dayÂs catches for everyone in attendance to see.  The five vessels that took part in the challenging day included Fishing Unlimited, Reel Challenge, Another Princess, Mad Storme and Dos Locos. Although many ships couldnÂt attend, there were still some large catches, as several of the competitors came home with great hauls.  Coming in first place was Mad Storme, who won the $3,000 grand prize with the highest weight in fish.  The $1,500 second prize went to Fishing Unlimited.  Meanwhile, Mad StormeÂs very own Steven Heusner managed to catch the biggest Wahoo of the day, netting himself $1,000 in the process.  Meanwhile, the best Junior Angler was given to Joshua Marin from Reel Challenge, whilst Another PrincessÂs Krista Paz won the accolade of Top Female Angler.
Overall, the day was a great success, with those taking part in the fishing and braving the rough seas having an exciting time, and those on the shore partying and spending a very pleasant Sunday with friends and family. It is hoped that many more fishing competitions will fill 2014, and that more ships and participants will be able to compete in later events.
