For the first time in history, a Belizean has won the Central American (CA) Junior Angler of the Year Award. Â Jhoan Hernandez, an 11-year-old pupil from the Holy Cross Anglican School on Ambergris Caye, was surprised to have won the award, which was given by Accurate Reel from Costa Mesa in California for the event. Â His dedication for fishing won him the regional accolade, making it the first time that anyone living in Belize has been recognized for their passion for fishing in the CA region as part of this particular award.
The news was given to Jhoan Hernandez on January 9th when officials visited the Holy Cross Anglican School during assembly to surprise him.  Members of the Accurate Reel board, the group behind the competition, all signed the plaque that was presented by the President of the San Pedro Game Fishing Association, Roberto Guerrero, and Strike Force BelizeÂs Rudy Lewis.  ÂSome of the people that fished with us at Strike Force Belize and use Accurate Reel products made the nomination and he was selected from among other nominees from Central America.  This is the first time a Belizean has received such award and it is an honor to be presenting him with this distinction, Lewis said, adding that he encouraged Jhoan to follow his passions and fulfill his dreams.
Talking of the unexpected award, Jhoan revealed that he loved fishing and was happy to accompany anyone whoÂd drag him along. Â He added that heÂd been passionate about fishing since he was only four years old and was excited to receive such an award.
Holy Cross Anglican SchoolÂs Principal, Grace Williams, revealed that she was extremely happy for Hernandez, adding that his achievement clearly showed his passion for fishing and helped demonstrate how the school strives to allow pupils to achieve their dreams. Â She added that she was over the moon that one of their own students was rewarded, and that she hoped it helped to inspire others and show pupils just what can be achieved if they put their minds to it.
