ItÂs been revealed that ReefCI, a Belize marine conservation organization, has been awarded with the Best for Responsible Wildlife Experience at an international travel show held in London. Â The recognition gives something for those living in Belize to be extremely proud of, and shows the world that the nation is not only a stunning vacation destination, but also a place where tourism and conservation is taken very seriously.
The 10th Annual World Responsible Tourism Awards was held in the famed Excel centre in London, England as the exhibition centre was host to the World Travel Market (WTM). Â Held between November 4th and 7th, 2013, thousands of the worldÂs media, industry professionals, tourism ministers and destination managers attended the event in order to update themselves on all the latest changes in the vacation market. Â Therefore, the award for Belize and Toledo was an extremely important one, putting the nation onto the national stage of awareness for conservation and tourism.
Before the award announcements were made, the judging panel revealed they were focused on recognizing organizations who provide tourists with a fantastic experience, but who also ensure that wildlife protection remains a top priority. Â It was important for the judging panel to find companies who have created the perfect balance between providing an amazing holiday experience whilst keeping conservation in mind.
ReefCI has worked extremely hard over the years to create a tourist opportunity that will keep holidaymakers talking about their experience for many months and years. Â At the same time, the operator collects species and population numbers for the sake of conservation, and also boosts the local economy in terms of employment and sourcing. Â TheyÂve also been heavily involved with the Fisheries in Belize to ensure that fish stocks and fishing are carefully managed so as to protect marine life.
Founder of ReefCI, Polly Alford, pointed out that winning the award and being in the top three in the world, meant a great deal to a small organization such as ReefCI. Â She gave thanks to both Responsible travel, which organized the event, and the team of judges for recognizing ReefCIÂs contribution.
ÂThis award is not just fantastic for ReefCI but also for Belize and the Toledo district, she said, adding: ÂToledo has so much to offer our tourists, the hidden jewel of the South.  I am very grateful to BTB, BTIA, Department of Fisheries, Hickatee cottages and all of our local supporters.  ItÂs their shared passion for our country that has hugely contributed to this incredible recognition!Â
