Those living in San Pedro Town are ecstatic after the news that the local San Pedro High School (SPHS) volleyball boys team has become National Champions in 2013.  Having already won their way through regional divisions, the young men headed to BelizeÂs national games and claimed the title for the first time.
Both the male and female SPHS volleyball teams have already worked their way through the Northern Regional Secondary Volleyball Tournament to qualify for the National Secondary Schools Sports Association (NSSSA) Volleyball Tournament. Â Held on November 8th and 9th at Saint JohnÂs College Gymnasium, eight teams qualified for the National Championships. Â The four female and four male teams represented BelizeÂs Western, Southern, Central and Northern regions, coming together for this exciting sporting event.
Whilst the Central region was represented by the boys of Saint JohnÂs College and the girls of Saint CatherineÂs Academy, the boys of Mopan Technical High School and the girls of the Belmopan Comprehensive High School represented the Western region. Â The Southern region was proud to support the girls and boys from the Stann Creek Ecumenical College and the Georgetown Technical High School respectively, whilst the Northern region was showcased by both girls and boys from SPHS.
On the first day, the two winning girls teams were San PedroÂs own SPHS girls and the youngsters from the Stann Creek Ecumenical College.  Meanwhile, San PedroÂs boys made it through to the second day, as did the Mopan Technical High School team.  As the second day dawned, it was a true battle for medals, with everyone fired up to do the best they could.  Unfortunately, a hard game for the SPHS girls led to a 3-0 defeat, pushing them back into fourth place.  Eventually, the Saint CatherineÂs Academy girls took the trophy.
Meanwhile, in the boys division, the SPHS boys fought hard to gain a 3-1 win against the Mopan Technical High School team.  Gabriel Nuñez was awarded with the MVP prize for the SPHS team.  On their return, the boys were ecstatic with their win, particularly as although they have played for the northern region twice before, theyÂve never managed to get the title.  In their honor, a grand parade was held on November 11th, allowing everyone to enjoy and celebrate the sporting accolade.
