In 2014, the Scottish city of Glasgow will take center stage as the host for the Commonwealth Games. Â Belize has now revealed that two local triathlon stars will head to Britain next year in the bid to win a medal.

Most sportsmen and women dream of competing on the international stage and getting into national teams to attend events such as the Olympics and Commonwealth Games, and this is something that many individuals strive for.  Now it seems that two local sportsmen living in Belize have reason to celebrate after being picked for Belize’s team.

Jordan Santos and Kent “Bob” Gabourel are well known in the San Pedro area, but now it seems that both men are to find international fame.  Beginning on July 23rd 2014 and lasting until August 3rd 2014, the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow will see more than 70 nations from around the world competing for medals. Gabourel and Santos will be there to showcase Belize, and are also hoping they may be able to snatch a medal away from some of the world’s favorite sports personalities.

Talking of his excitement for the event, Gabourel said that to be chosen to represent Belize was a huge honor.  “I have always wanted to represent my country at an international level, but I never thought that it would be in this discipline, triathlon.  I intend to dedicate much of my time to prepare for the Commonwealth Games in order to do the best I can for my country.  In order to prepare for this event we need the full support for the community and the country on a whole,” Gabourel said, adding that he wanted to be a positive role model for youngsters, and show kids that you can truly follow your dreams.

Meanwhile, Santos is hard at work attempting to qualify for the Youth Olympic Games.  He will be Belize’s youngest athlete competing at the Commonwealth Games.  Alongside the local stars will also be Belize City’s Kaya Cottouse, who is also hoping for recognition in the triathlon event.

For those who want to help support the athletes, Gabourel and Santos will both be fundraising over the coming months to pay for their travel. Â The expenses are expected to be high, so any help for the men is gratefully received.
