Residents of San Pedro who regularly use the medical services at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in Belize City will be pleased to hear that the project for the new Pediatric Intensive Care Unit is the recipient of a very generous donation.
Living in Belize will occasionally mean traveling for certain medical facilities and this particular hospital is within easy reach. The full donation to the new unit totals $1 million and the donor has decided to remain anonymous. The donation will be made in two halves of $500,000 each. The hospital administration has declared that this shows that people understand just how important this project is for the region. The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit will be the first dedicated units for critically ill children and newborn babies in the country.
This very generous donation has been sent in via the Lifeline Foundation and it is actually the second largest donation made through this organization. Representatives of the foundation have thanked the donors for being friends of the hospital and the country too. The timing of the donation is good as it comes hot on the heels of the celebrations of the hospital's 18th anniversary.
The Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital invited the media to take part in the celebrations to mark the occasion and the bosses at the hospital were able to talk to them about the progress that has been made as well as some of the challenges faced by the organization. In recent months the hospital has faced a crisis including an infection that killed a number of babies in its pediatric intensive care unit.
The Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital serves as the national referral hospital so treats patients from all parts of the country including San Pedro Town and Ambergris Caye. The hospital has made great progress in recent years and is considered one of the country's top hospitals. As one of the newer institutions it offers some of the most modern medical services in Belize.
Those who are living in Belize will find that areas such as San Pedro and Ambergris Caye have medical services that are perfectly adequate but a trip to Belize City may be necessary for some procedures. This is one of the reasons why support for projects such as this is so important.
