Volleyball is taken extremely seriously in Belize, and anyone looking for things to do on Ambergris Caye may well stumble upon a volleyball match or two in which they can get involved. Â The sport is particularly spotlighted in the country at the moment after the Belize Youth Female National Volleyball Team returned home having won several awards at the Central American championships.

The volleyball team arrived back in Belize having competed in the Guatemalan-based Central American Female Youth (U18) Volleyball Championships.  In 2013, the championships were held in Guatemala City, and the Belize team finished the tournament in a very respectable 4th place with a 2-3 record.  The women’s team lost their final game in straight sets to the undefeated Costa Rican team who went on to take 1st place for the championships.  Throughout the tournament, the women’s volleyball team faced several competing nations, and won 3-1 against both Nicaragua and El Salvador.  Meanwhile, they lost out to Honduras by 2-3, and to Guatemala and Costa Rica in straight sets.

The major improvement in the Belizean women’s team has been recognized by the country that has celebrated the rise in rankings.  A statement by the Belize Volleyball Association said “The young girls have made Belize proud with a gutsy performance, working hard, and providing a good result.  The experience will be valuable as the results continue to improve with each competition and volleyball continues to grow.  We are proud of the result of the female youth national team.”

Whilst narrowly missing out on a medal, several individual girls return home to Belize with awards. Â Karen Quan, captain of the Belizean team, was recognized for the Best Setter, whilst teammate Keyanna Sebastian was awarded as Best Blocker, and Nayala Tun won two awards; those for Best Libero and Best Defense.

Part of the charm of moving to Belize is being able to live in paradise and enjoy the beautiful beaches and exciting marine life that is all around. Â For those wanting things to do in Ambergris Caye, there is plenty to keep people amused, including hiking, bird watching, exploring ancient ruins and descending beneath the waves to explore fish and colorful creatures. Â For those who are looking to get active, trying their hand at volleyball is well worthwhile.
