Government and Politics

Belize is a parliamentary democracy. The country held it’s first elections in 1984, when Belize became an independent country..

The government is directed by an elected prime minister. A bicameral legislature, the National Assembly, comprises an appointed Senate and an elected House of Representatives. There are two active parties in Belize, the PUP (People’s United Party) and the UDP (United Democratic Party).

Belizeans are very involved in their political process. Belize is a peaceful country where the majority of the residents are law abiding and very proud of their country’s independence and self rule.

Belize is a full participating member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).
