All those living in Belize know just how beautiful their country is, but the residents of Ambergris Caye have extra reason to celebrate after the island was picked as the top spot for the 2014 TravelerÂs Choice Island Awards.
ItÂs the second consecutive year that the destination has been chosen as TripAdvisorÂs top island retreat, showcasing that Belize really is a great place for vacations. The award is likely to attract even more visitors to the island, boosting tourism and the local economy as a result.
As TripAdvisor handed a host of accolades out on February 19th, nations around the world waited with bated breath to see if theyÂd been chosen for some of the highly contested and acclaimed spots. It seems as if visitors to Ambergris Caye really want to celebrate this beautiful destination, and made sure that it ranked as the best island in the world once again. Coming from the visitors themselves, the award means even more, indicating that guests really are having the time of their lives.
Describing the stunning Belizean island on their website, TripAdvisor said that the location of Ambergris Caye is the perfect balance for tourists, with enough amenities to make people comfortable but benefiting from not being overdeveloped. ÂA mangrove swamp is the eye of this white beach island, the largest in Belize, and golf carts are the main form of transportation along the sandy roads. Reef divers drool over the Belize Barrier Reef and the Blue Hole, a 400-feet deep circle of limestone that teems with angelfish, elk horn coral, cleaner shrimp and stalactites, the website continues.
Welcoming the latest accolade, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Civil Aviation, Honorable Maunuel Heredia, said that he was committed to ensuring that Ambergris Caye remains in the number one spot for many years to come. He added that the hard work by BelizeanÂs hadnÂt gone unnoticed.
Belize had stiff competition when it came to the top rankings, with the Society Islands Bora Bora also fighting for the best place. In addition, other islands, such as Turks and Caicos Providenciales, FloridaÂs Marco Island, ChileÂs Easter Islands and the Cyclades Naxos were all being mentioned. However, in the end, the great balance of climate, tourist attractions, local and diverse traditions and a range of amenities meant that the much-loved Ambergris Caye triumphed once again.
