It seems that San Pedro Town is becoming rather well-known for its sporting achievements, and after it was revealed that the San Pedro Junior Sailing Team continues to prosper, other achievements have followed on the football field. With the Sunset Boardwalk Project almost completed, residents of the town have been able to play on Saca Chispas Field once again. This meant that a football tournament could be held on February 8th and 9th, getting local and neighboring teams together for some fun and entertaining matches.

The field has been closed for 18 months due to construction work being conducted nearby; however, as soon as it became free, it was the ideal situation for the keen athletes of the town to make use of the space immediately. On Saturday 8th, two football games were held in the early evening to kick the tournament off.

In the first match of the night, CostaBlu and Dorados faced each other, with both teams doing everything they could to ensure the new field was properly worn in. The game ended with a 1-1 draw. Second onto the field that night was Victoria House and Joker FC. It seemed that Joker FC had been preparing themselves for battle and came away victorious, a win of 6 - 1 under their belts.

Despite a few showers on Sunday 9th, it wasn’t enough to dampen people’s spirits, and eight teams turned up. FC United won the first match with a 5 - 3 victory against Caribbean Depot. The second game was tied 0 - 0 between Legends of San Pedro Town and Caye Caulker, while the Southwind took the third match against the Veterans, 2 - 0. In the final game of the day, it was the Warriors against Island Pure. The latter team took the match with a 5 - 2 score.

The first weekend of the tournament went off extremely well, and though the field’s been out of action for a long time, passionate footballers seem to think it’s been worth waiting for its return. Many more matches are planned for upcoming weekends, where players will compete against each other once again in a bid to win the top title. And, for all those in San Pedro, the matches are a great chance to have an entertaining weekend.
