2014 was ushered in with a bang by the residents of San Pedro Town. Â On December 31st, hundreds of islanders and visitors gathered on Ambergris Caye to celebrate the start of the New Year, with the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) laying on a fantastic event of fireworks. Â There were also many parties taking place around the island for people to celebrate and dance the night away.
There was a lot to offer revelers of New YearÂs Eve, with the skies above La Isla Bonita erupting into a vivid firework display at midnight. Â Wanting to celebrate in style, the SPTC built a huge stage on Barrier Reef Drive directly below the Town Clock. Â A lot of varied entertainment was put on throughout the evening, including performances from Rompe Raja and the San Pedro High School Band. Â As the clock prepared to strike midnight, Daniel Guerrero, San Pedro TownÂs Mayor, and a number of other area representatives, including Honorable Manual Heredia Jr., took to the stage. Â They wished everyone a prosperous 2014 as hundreds of people gathered in the streets and prepared for the countdown.
In addition to the celebrations by the Town Clock, many people gathered, as is tradition, at the San Pedro Lions Den. Â Here, the famed Lions New Year Dance took place; a traditional New YearÂs celebration for many of the families living on Ambergris Caye. Â Music was played throughout the night, with Super Furia from Orange Walk Town taking to the stage. Â People danced through the night until 8am on January 1st as celebrations continued well into the next day. Â In addition, the popular annual New YearÂs raffle was also held, with prizes such as round trips to Belize City, a refrigerator and gift certificates.
Meanwhile, other party-goers gathered at LolaÂs Pub to see the midnight ÂCoco Loco balloon drop. Live music was provided by D Cover Ups band so that people could dance throughout the night.  More events were also held at other locations on the island.
