Keeping youngsters amused in modern times can be hard, and many parents are worried about their children turning to alcohol and drugs for recreational use.  On October 12th a football marathon was held in the Ambergris Stadium to promote healthy hobbies that engage and fuel kids’ passion for life.

Those living in San Pedro Town will know only too well the popularity that football has.  On Saturday 12th October a large crowd gathered to cheer on players as they took part in San Pedro Town Council’s (SPTC’s) football marathon.  The event, organized by Ernildo Jones, ran from 10am to 4pm, with the winning teams getting prizes and trophies at the end of the day.

The day kicked off with a match between the San Pedro FC and San Mateo Strikers.  Whilst San Pedro’s boys played like professionals, the Strikers were too much for them in the end, and took the game 2-1. After the conclusion of the first game, the Under 20 team took on Team Rest of the World.  There was a ferocious battle amongst the players, but the Under 20 finally won the game 2-1.

Whilst San Pedro’s boys faced defeat, it was the girls of the Sartenja Stars who created a lot of attention on the day.  A female-face off between the Sartenja Stars and the San Pedro Ultimate Pelican Stars meant that both teams fought hard to bring the match to a stunning tie of 4-4.  However, at the last minute, the Sartenja Stars edged ahead with a goal and won the match 5-4.

Talking about the event, Mr. Jones explained that the purpose of the football marathon was to engage youngsters in a healthy way and steer them away from violence, drugs and alcohol.  With football being an extremely popular sport in San Pedro Town, not just for children but all ages, it’s a great way to expel energy and do something positive.  In addition, it can be a great team building exercise and help steer kids in the right direction.  Mr. Jones added that he wanted to thank the referees for managing the day’s games, as well as the spectators who attended and made the event such a spectacle.

The Ultimate Pelican Stars will next be seeing the Sartenja Stars in a rematch on October 19th in Corozal. Â For those who want to know more, they can go online and visit www.grandbaymen.com.
