Residents and visitors to San Pedro town, Belize, have been able to take part in the celebrations for the 32nd anniversary of the country’s independence.

As part of the event the council in San Pedro town had an official flag raising ceremony along with a fireworks display and the annual block party hosted in Central Park. As part of the official ceremony on September 20th, Mayor Daniel Guerrero and the Minister of Tourism gave speeches to begin the formal celebrations and then the festivities began. Dance shows from local dance academies and performances from local singers were high on the agenda.

As part of the Belize independence celebrations a parade was held immediately after the speeches. Miss San Pedro for 2013 was led in by the Deputy Mayor and accompanied by the local high school marching band and torch bearers. The coast guard assembly also took part in the parade and featured one of the newest recruits to the country’s coast guard, Almita Pinelo, who has recently qualified after training in the US. Almita was chosen to lead the coast guard assembly who were inspected by the mayor and the Minister of Tourism before the 21 gun salute took place at midnight. The firework display was held immediately afterwards and the sky was lit up for miles around for approximately half an hour.

The following day saw the celebrations continue in San Pedro town with a concert held in the same park. This featured performers from El Salvador as well as local performers. One of these was the military symphony – a 64 piece orchestra. The concert lasted for two hours and music from all genres was played to those who attended. Movie themes and compilations from specific composers were all part of the event. Visitors also got to hear tributes to some of the music world’s top names including Abba and The Beatles. The El Salvador ambassador was a VIP guest at this particular event and the concert was packed with local people. The atmosphere at the event was lively and locals were reminiscing about similar concerts held there in the past.

Independence celebrations are important to the people of Belize and San Pedro town and a great deal of planning went in to this year’s event.
